How to Make Thai Melodramas.

Thai melodramas are unique but very easy to make; I can even teach you the basic principles in a few sentences. First, find your actors. Find popular Thai stars if you have enough money, or just a handsome, tanned-skinned Asian guy with very black, thick eyebrows and big eyes to be your main male character. Find an innocent-looking Asian girl with--most importantly--white skin (Thai people hate tan girls) to be your main female character. Do not forget to find another beautiful but evil-looking sassy Asian girl to be your evil character.

Jum Lei Ruk, one of the most popular Thai dramas in 2008.

Second, adapt Cinderella’s plot with a bit of a twist; you do not have to be very creative, just do not forget to include a “slap scene.” Normally, it should be the scene in which the evil character slaps your fragile female main character.

Third, find the white light. Thai people hate yellow, soft light. They love to see clear things, not a soft, whimsical one. Fourth, train your actors with an overly-exaggerated acting style, especially the evil character who has to have a noisy, high-pitched voice to speak loudly or even scream all the time; she is the one who has to act like she is jealous of the main female character and angry at her all the time. She makes bigger eyes, clenching her teeth, twisting her mouth, and then, screams!! Do not forget to train your female main characters to cry since she has to cry on demand and also act like the poor unfortunate victim of this corrupted world in almost every scene. The last thing is a sound. You should have some noisy, funny sounds, like “pewww!!” and “whoooopppp!!,” to signal the audiences that “this is a funny scene; you must laugh!” That’s it!

Ariel (The Little Mermaid).

Among the many Disney princesses, the one that I love the most is the little mermaid, Ariel. She is not only the only non-human Disney princess but she also has a unique look: the only red haired Disney princess with cute, big, blue eyes and thin, red lips that look sexy and pretty at the same time. Of course, the significant characteristic of mermaids is their beautiful voices, but unlike typical mermaids’ innocent voices that are like a pure crystal glass, Ariel’s voice is more like a colorful stained glass; the vivid colors comes from a teenager’s curiosity, dreams, and innocence. The thing that I love the most about her and that distinguishes her from tons of Disney princesses is that her humanized characteristics are very contemporary and touchable, not too idealistic like those of the others.
Most Disney princess are, sometimes, too friendly and care about every single one near them. Take Snow White as an example. She cares and tries to makes friend with the seven dwarves or even many animals she meets when she get lost in the forest as she runs away from her step mother’s killer, and she does a successful job on that (Think about it! if you got lost in a forest, you would surely try to find the way out as soon as possible without singing or making friend with wild animals, like Snow White).
However, sixteen-year-old Ariel is more like a teenager nowadays: rebellious, adventurous, passionate but still innocent. She hates to follow her dad’s advice not to come close to humans; she does not care about her dad or her dad’s advisor, Sebastian; all she cares is about her dream of becoming human and being with the one she falls in love with, Eric, who is a human and, of course, a prince charming. However, because of her innocence, she makes a big mistake by making a deal with Ursula--the sea witch who wants her father’s throne--which in turn, almost makes her father lose his kingdom.  While she seems to be just an ignorant, spoiled teenager, she finally realizes that she has made a mistake and accepts it by designing to live with her father in the mermaid world. Therefore, in the end, I can see that Ariel grows up to be a more responsible person. She is the princess that is not perfect or ideal from the beginning, but she can change and care more about others from her experiences. This is another thing that makes this princess more like human, not just two-dimensional animated characters, and makes her reachable than the other princesses. And if you want to know how much I am crazy about her, just look at my hair, it is red ;).

Fun Fact ::
In the film, Waking Sleeping Beauty (the documentary about charts the rebirth of Disney animation),
the artist, "Glen Keane, who specialized in drawing villains, heard the pre-recorded demo of Jodi Benson singing 'Part of Your World' and begged to draw Ariel. The 'Little Mermaid' directors said to him, 'Can you even draw a pretty girl?' And Glen said, 'I've got to draw Ariel. I can feel it in my heart.' It was that kind of inspiration."
Yes, she was really "created" from her personalities.

Thai Sunny Side Up.

After almost two years in the US, the thing that frustrates me the most is that I cannot cook my favorite food item in my home: Thai sunny side up. The Thai sunny side up egg is not a white, flat, two-dimensional, almost symmetrical circle that has beautiful orange half-circle in the center like American sunny side up. It is an asymmetrical white circle surrounded by a brown, crispy rim with a center of orange and a brown crispy surface on the other side.

The reasons that prevent me from cooking Thailand’s easiest-to-cook food item are ridiculous: place and instrument. First, this food requires a big wok, not an American small, flat pan. Second, it requires me to have an outdoor place to cook because I have to use a gas oven, not an American built-in electric oven that I have in my apartment.  It is impossible for just an Asian student like me to find a gas oven. It is also impossible to just open my door and cook on the corridor outside my room with tons of smoke without someone yelling at me or thinking that this building is burning.

To cook it is, again, easy: open the gas, pour a lot of oil—any cooking oil at all—on the wok, wait until the oil becomes quite hot, drop the egg, wait until the egg is a bit cooked, put the hot oil on the rim of white portion of the egg, leave the yolk to be as rare as possible, and do not flip the egg.
If you want to try to cook Thai homemade food, you can begin with this simple food at home, but the easiest way is that you just buy the instruments, prepare many eggs and your backyard, call me, and don’t forget to share.
